United Nations, December 15 (RHC)-- A government delegation, headed by President Xiomara Castro, has agreed  to a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations for the installation of an International Commission against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (Cicih).

According to official sources, one of the Honduran president's campaign promises is about to be fulfilled in order to address one of the most serious problems that has dragged the Central American country for decades.
"The memorandum for the installation of the CICIH in Honduras will be signed Thursday," Honduran congresswoman Xiomara Zelaya, also daughter of the president, published on her Twitter account, without providing further details.

Sources of the delegation present in New York informed that Xiomara Castro and the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, met the day before to agree on some elements and steps to follow with the mechanism.

According to media reports, during the first quarter of 2023 both parties will define the sources of financing for the Cicih, under the protection of the international community.

"We recently had a meeting with the Swedish ambassador, which has been one of the cooperations that had distanced itself from our country at a bilateral level, and they have shown that they want to collaborate in the Cicih issue together with the will of the President and the Government," stated the Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation, Cindy Rodriguez.

Experts believe that the Cicih needs external funding to ensure longevity, independence and total autonomy in its work.

In January 2020, the Honduran Parliament did not authorize a second four-year term for the Mission of Support against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (Maccih), a creation of the Organization of American States (OAS).
