Madrid, May 29 (RHC)-- A fourth precarious boat found with 48 people on board brings to 167 the migrants rescued in the Canary Islands, Spain this Sunday, off the coasts of the islands of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, according to a Salvamento Maritimo information.

According to the information itself, the last vessel was sighted around 07H00 local time (06H00 GMT), by a fishing boat 120 km from Arrecife (Lanzarote), when it was stopped and without fuel.   The Guardamar Polimnia came to her rescue, and rescued the 48 people on board, all North Africans, 45 men and three women, and in apparent good health.

Likewise, in the south of Gran Canaria, 32 immigrants were helped by the Red Cross late on Saturday after arriving in the area of the Maspalomas lighthouse.

The so-called Atlantic route, which takes migrants from the African coasts to the Canary Islands, the first European soil they encounter, is considered the most deadly of all migratory routes.

According to information from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, 28,930 irregular migrants arrived in that European country by sea in 2022 and 15,682 of them used the Atlantic route.
