Tegucigalpa, July 8 (RHC)-- The Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs, Enrique Reina, announced that on Sunday, July 9th, a UN mission will arrive in the country to collaborate in the creation of a mechanism against corruption and impunity.

Foreign Minister Reina informed that the representation of the UN and his government will advance in the negotiation process of what will be the agreement for the establishment of the International Commission against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras, (Cicih).

The UN also said on Friday that three experts will arrive in the Central American country to provide technical assistance in relation to the future establishment of the CICIH.

Last May, the UN had announced the dispatch of a mission of experts to provide assistance and aid to the government for the establishment of the anti-corruption mechanism.  It was learned that the establishment of the Cicih will be in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2022 between the UN Secretariat and the Honduran government.

The Cicih will begin functioning when UN Secretary António Guterres and the government agree in writing on minimum legal guarantees and requirements for its operation.  Opposition sectors have expressed their doubts that the opposition deputies, who dominate Congress, will approve the creation of this UN entity and the laws that will allow it to operate.
