Nearly two-thirds of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed by Israel

Gaza City, August 5 (RHC)-- The latest escalation of the Zionist genocide over the Gaza Strip has produced a volume of rubble 14 times greater than the combined sum of all conflicts over the past 16 years, according to reports from Gaza City.

The total amount of debris generated by the genocidal war of aggression is approximately 41,946,018 metric tons.  This conclusion was reached in a comprehensive assessment by the agencies of the United Nations, UN-Habitat and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)Made public this weekend.

The analysis, using satellite images provided by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), provides a detailed overview of the extensive destruction and its implications for debris management.

The latest building damage assessment by UNOSAT, based on satellite images of 6 July 2024 and updated building footprints of May 2023.   

The report also reveals that 151,265 structures have been affected in the Gaza Strip.  Of these, 30 percent were destroyed, 12 percent severely damaged, 36 percent moderately damaged and 20 percent possibly damaged, The region’s structural structure is now at about 63 per cent of the total.

The total amount of debris represents an increase from 22,930,000 tonnes on 7 January 2024 to 41,946,018 tonnes on 6 July 2024, an 83 percent increase.

Indeed, the border city of Rafah experienced a 1,149 per cent increase, while Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah in the center of the Gaza Strip, increased by 163 per cent and 95 per cent respectively.

The Gaza governorate, in the far north, recorded the highest total amount of rubble, with a 63 percent increase over the same period.  For every square metre in the Gaza Strip, this recent analysis estimates that 114 kilograms of rubble were generated.

The impact on civil infrastructure is evident, with thousands of homes and critical facilities damaged.
