Brasilia, September 11 (RHC)-- The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has authorized the deployment of the Armed Forces to guarantee the electoral process of the 2024 elections.

The decree, published this Monday in the Official Gazette of the Union, was signed by Lula, the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and the Chief Minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcos Antonio Amaro dos Santos.

The participation of the Armed Forces in the electoral process will be defined according to the terms of the request of the TSE.

The Brazilian Armed Forces usually help during the electoral process with the distribution and collection of ballot boxes to ensure voting in places far from large urban centers and difficult to access.

The first round of the elections will be next Sunday, October 6, and more than 150 million Brazilians are expected to participate to elect mayors and renew municipal chambers, which represents an increase of 5% compared to the 2020 elections.

At the moment, it is estimated that 461,012 candidates will participate in this contest, of which 15,465 aspire to the position of mayor; 15,682 for vice mayor; and 429,865 for councilor.
