Kingston, October 28 (RHC-Xinhua) -- The Barbadian government on Monday ordered a national shutdown of public and private schools as a precaution against inclement weather.

A passing tropical wave interacting with an upper-level low, and a trough over the Eastern Caribbean has been generating downpours, thunderstorms and occasional gusty winds across Barbados since Sunday.

The closure covers all schools, nurseries, community colleges and polytechnics that fall under the government's purview, the Ministry of Education said in an announcement broadcast on state radio and television.

Barbados' meteorological authorities suggested that residents keep alert and take necessary precautions on possible secondary disasters including landslides in vulnerable areas.

Police has also released an alert for motorists to avoid flooded roads in some communities. Several bridges were reportedly affected by persistent heavy rains.

There have been no immediate reports on casualties caused by the inclement weather.
