Bogotá, October 29 (RHC-Xinhua) -- British Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, arrived in Bogotá on Tuesday afternoon for an official visit to Colombia.

It is the first official visit by Prince Charles to Colombia although he visited Cartagena, a former colonial citadel in Colombia's northern Caribbean region, as a naval officer in 1974.

Upon their arrival, the royal couple attended a reception hosted by the British Embassy where they met Colombian ex-presidents, businesspeople, athletes, and Colombian Football Federation President Luis Bedoya, who gave the Prince the national team's jersey.

During the visit, the royal couple are expected to meet with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, and attend some functions, including a ceremony held at a school in northern Bogotá to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the British Council institute in Colombia.

They will be at the Center for Memory, Peace and Reconciliation, where Prince Charles is expected to show Britain's support for the peace process undergoing between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's largest guerrilla group, to seek an end to the armed conflicts.

The couple will also travel again to Cartagena to attend an international conference on oceans and visit the Royal Navy frigate "HMS Argyll" before departing to Mexico on Sunday.

The couple reportedly made the visit to the South American country at the request of the British government and seek to boost Britain's ties and cooperation with Colombia.
