Washington, November 29 (RHC)-- The FBI has announced that gun sales increased in the United States during one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Black Friday. FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said the federal background check system is expected to set a record of over 144,000 background checks on Friday. He added that 600 FBI and contract call center employees would complete the reviews in three business days.

The number of checks shows an average of almost three checks per second, nearly three times the daily average. The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System said over 500 checks per day fail because of incomplete information.

Fischer said that the agency had processed more than 94,000 transactions as of 2.00 p.m. Friday. "The challenge is to have staff keep up with this volume. We do that by limiting personal leave, asking employees to work extra shifts and re-utilizing former employees to serve in NICS during this busy period," he said.

For buying guns in the U.S. people must fill out a form from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with basic identification information.
