United Nations, December 24 (RHC)-- The United Nations Security Council will vote before the end of 2014 on a draft resolution calling for the recognition of the Palestinian state, a chief Palestinian negotiator says.

In the past few months, the Palestinian national unity government has been pushing for a UN resolution that determines the borders of a future Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 lines. Israel has expressed anger over the motion.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Saeb Erekat said the Security Council will vote on the resolution "very soon" at any time before the end of 2014. He added that several amendments have been made to the draft which was submitted by Jordan on December 17th.

The draft resolution, approved by the Arab League in September, sets 2016 as the date for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian territories. The text is also expected to lay out a timeframe for negotiations on a final peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

This is while the Israeli regime’s chief sponsor, the United States, has vowed to oppose the Palestinian draft resolution, specifically objecting to the deadline for an Israeli withdrawal.
