Mexico City, January 6 (RHC-Xinhua) -- The Attorney General's Office (GJ) for Mexico's Gulf Coast state of Veracruz said Monday that local police officers have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a newsman.

"As part of the investigations into the disappearance of Moises Sanchez Cerezo, municipal police officers from (the town of) Medellin were arrested in the early hours of the day," the PGJ said in a press release.

According to Mexico's radio news network Grupo Formula, authorities arrested two officers on the force in Medellin, a city that borders on the state capital, also called Veracruz. The names of the suspects were not released.

Sanchez, owner of local weekly La Union, which the newsman worked for, was reported missing by family members on Friday. According to witnesses, Sanchez was seized at his home at 7:30 p.m. by a group of unidentified heavily-armed men.

Jorge Sanchez, his son, told reporters that he believes his father's reporting had something to do with his abduction, and that he had recently been threatened.
