Caracas, March 23 (teleSUR-RHC) A new campaign, “Obama, Venezuela is not a threat!,” has gathered over 1 million signatures in less than a week. The campaign asks for people to sign up to an open letter to U.S. President Barack Obama requesting that the White House repeals an executive order declaring the South American country a national security threat.

The Venezuelan government will take the signatures to the Summit of the Americas in Panama in April.

The campaign was launched last Thursday. The head of the campaign, Caracas Mayor Jorge Rodriguez, announced the success during a televised message on the VTV station.

Rodriguez revealed that the Twitter hashtag #ObamaRepealTheExecutiveOrder – which is part of the campaign – has had over 2.6 million tweets and re-tweets. “I think it is an impressive figure” expressing the “the widespread will expressed around the globe against this infamous executive order,” explained Rodriguez.

Venezuelan campaigners have set up posts in every city to continue gathering signatures, and international adherents can sign the petition at the following link: http://www.obamarepealtheexecutiveorder.org.ve/registroLeyEnglish/
