Lima, April 03 (teleSUR-RHC) Lawyer Pedro Cateriano was named Peru's new Prime Minister late Thursday, after previous prime minister, Ana Jara, was sacked earlier this week over a spying scandal.

Jara was forced to step down on Monday after losing a vote of confidence in congress over alleged spying against lawmakers, journalists, business leaders and other citizens via Peru's National Intelligence Directorate (DINI).

The new prime minister will be the seventh to take the post since Humala became president in 2011. According to the opposition, Jara had failed to control the spy agency and should therefore be removed.

After serving three years in the Ministry of Defense, Cateriano was selected by President Ollanta Humala to take her place as Prime Minister.

Other cabinet changes have also taken place, including replacing Cateriano as Minister of Defense with Jakke Raimo Valakivi Alvarez.

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights as well as a chancellor from the Ministry of Foreign have also been replaced.

In 30 days from Thursday, Congress will have to vote on whether or not to accept the new cabinet. Earlier this week President Humala voiced his disappointment with the cabinet's decision to censure Jara, saying “No one wins from this situation.” “Congress has taken the liberty of being irresponsible but we at the executive cannot afford to follow the same path, we have to keep working,” he said.
