Caracas, April 24 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The Venezuelan state-owned company PDVSA donated 50,000 computers to El Salvador on Thursday.

The delivery was announced by Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren on his Twitter account. With the program “One kid, one computer” the Salvadoran government aims at granting computers to over 2,500 public schools this year. “Today is a historic day for El Salvador's Education System, Sanchez Ceren wrote on his Twitter account.

The computers, said Lempitas, are being provided through Alba Foundation, financed by Alba Petroleos oil company, a PDVSA subsidiary.

Over 6,000 computers arrived in the country on Thursday. The rest of the 50,000 units will arrive in the following days. Alba Foundation also finances social programs such as a scholarships for poor students and a school maintenance fund.

By the end of the year, the Salvadoran government aims to equip 84,396 students and 1,000 teachers with computers. The program is also adding Internet access to all public schools in the country.

Taiwan and the United Nations Development Program are also helping El Salvador in the implementation of the program. The government has implemented a series of social programs destined to benefit students, such as “A Child, A Glass of Milk” and an on-line university to help underprivileged students earn a college degree.
