La Paz, October 1 (teleSUR-RHC)-- South American government officials met in Bolivia on Wednesday to discuss strategies to combat regional human trafficking.     

The event, which is being attended by members from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), allows for officials to share experiences and discuss the challenges facing the region in the area of human trafficking.       

“Today we will provide recommendations and conclusions so that representatives can submit proposals to the UNASUR organizational body,” Bolivian official Javier Quispe said.

Bolivian officials are hoping to reverse the growing number of human trafficking cases, Bolivian Vice Minister of Citizen Security Carlos Aparicio told local media outlets on Tuesday.          

The meetings also coincide with a new proposal issued on Monday by UNASUR defense ministers to create a regional intelligence center aimed at combating organized transnational crime.

In its Constitutive Treaty, UNASUR members committed to strengthening the fight against the global drug problem, corruption, trafficking in small arms and light weapons, terrorism, transnational organized crime, and human trafficking.
