Caracas, Nov. 14 (teleSUR-RHC) Ahead of Venezuela’s Dec. 6 national legislative elections, the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) announced that it will send an electoral observer mission in order to monitor polling stations throughout the country. “UNASUR’s electoral commission will deploy its electoral mission for these elections in which the Venezuelan people will decide the future of their country,” a UNASUR press release stated. Meanwhile, the U.S. backed Organization of American States (OAS) has not been invited by Venezuela to perform its customary role of international observation. Instead, several international delegations including the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and MERCOSUR will play the electoral observer role traditionally performed by the OAS. Leading up to the elections, the commission of Latin American electoral experts (Ceela) is also scheduled to arrive in Venezuela to observe the various pre-electoral activities in the run up to polling day. The Venezuelan electoral process will go through 17 audits to guarantee its transparency. Almost 20 million Venezuelans are registered to vote and will be entitled to choose 167 lawmakers Dec. 6.
