Buenos Aires, November 18 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Latin American intellectuals, political officials as well as leaders from various social movements issued their support for Argentine presidential candidate Daniel Scioli of the ruling Front for Victory party leading up to country’s national elections on Sunday. A press release issued by the Network in Defense of Humanity (REDH) warned that a victory for conservative candidate Mauricio Macri could potentially undermine the recent progress that has redefined the economic and political landscape of the region. “To guarantee the continuation of regional progress and integration, the FPV must win in Argentina on November 22. For that reason we lend our support to Scioli and Zannini,” said Ecuadorean Culture Minister Guillaume Long. Throughout his electoral campaign Macri has said that if elected he would introduce new economic policy changes, marking a potential reversal of the Kirchner era’s redistribution policies. The REDH statement went on to warn that, “A victory for Macri would represent a resurgence of the right-wing throughout the continent.” Argentina will go to the polls November 22nd in what is expected to be a tight presidential election. In the first round of voting in October, Scioli and Macri finished head to head, with 36.9 percent of the vote and 34.3 percent respectively. The tight race forced a runoff, an unusual affair in Argentinean politics. The last time there was a runoff between candidates in Argentina was in 1973, when Ricardo Balbin handed the election to Hector Campora, who had won 46.5 percent of the vote.
