Rio de Janeiro, December 14 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Brazil unveiled the world's largest floating Christmas tree, in a traditional ceremony attended by nearly 200,000 people. Floating on a lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, the tree weighs over 300 tons, stands at 53 meters high, and is lit by 2.5 million lights. The gargantuan structure has been recognized as the largest floating Christmas tree in the world by the Guinness Book of Records, and has become a tradition in Rio de Janeiro. For two decades, the tree has made its appearance in the lead-up to Christmas, though this year its unveiling was postponed due to technical issues. Last month, the top of the tree collapsed in heavy winds, forcing organizers to make last minute repairs. Despite the behind the scenes crisis, Saturday's ceremony was warmly welcomed by local residents, who were treated to a massive fireworks display as the tree was put on show. While on display, the tree will be moved around the lake, allowing it to be viewed from different parts of the city. Christmas is one of the most important annual religious festivals in Brazil, a majority Christian nation.
