United Nations, February 10 (RHC)-- South Africa's permanent representative at the United Nations, Jeremiah Nyamane Kingsley, said that Cuba's support and commitment to just causes around the world can only raise admiration.  “We will never forget Cuba's contribution to the defeat of apartheid and its support of African nations,” the South African representative told Prensa Latina news agency.

The remarks followed a tribute paid in New York to South African leader Nelson Mandela over the weekend.  Jeremiah Nyamane went on to say that Cuban solidarity has reached many parts of the world, particularly in the areas of health and education.

He recalled that after 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela visited Cuba to express his gratitude to the island.  At that time, Mandela said that the Cuban people were always there when needed.

The tribute to Mandela was held at the Riverside Church on Saturday and was sponsored by New York-based organizations with the attendance of over 250 people.

Speakers from the U.S., Cuba and South Africa eulogized the legacy of Nelson Mandela, his commitment to peace, justice and tolerance.
