Havana, December 22 (RHC-ACN)-- Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, Cuba's permanent representative to the United Nations, said Thursday that the intention of the United States Government to modify the historic status of Jerusalem violates the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people and nations Arab and Islamic, according to the digital portal Cubaminrex.

The Ambassador spoke at the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly of the United Nations on the topic "Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and in the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories", where the diplomat expressed Cuba's position on a subject that is of crucial repercussion in the efforts of peace in the world.

Rodriguez Camejo pointed out that this intention of the Donald Trump government will also have serious consequences for stability and security in the Middle East. It will further increase tensions in this region and impede any effort aimed at resuming peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

He recalled that Cuba's position on the issue is firm and has been clearly reflected in the "Declaration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba on recognition by the United States of the city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," issued on December 6.

He cited the document, when he expressed the deepest concern and rejection for the unilateral declaration by the President of the United States of the city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which constitutes a serious and flagrant violation of the UN Charter, the International Law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.

The diplomat said that Cuba calls on the Security Council to fulfill the responsibility given to it by the UN Charter in the maintenance of international peace and security, to adopt the necessary decisions, and to demand from Israel the immediate end of the occupation of the Palestinian territories, and the aggressive policies and colonizing practices, as well as the fulfillment of the resolutions approved by that organ on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.

He also confirmed that Cuba will continue to support a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, based on a two-State solution, which allows the Palestinians the right to self-determination and to have an independent and sovereign State, with its capital in East Jerusalem and the pre-1967 borders.

Rodriguez Camejo said that Cuba fully subscribed to the statement made by the delegation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, and supported the statements made by the delegation of Turkey on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Delegation of Yemen on behalf of the Arab Group.

To close, he affirmed that, consistent with its historic principled position on this matter, Cuba joined the co-authors of the draft resolution contained in document A / ES-10 / L-22 entitled "Statute of Jerusalem" and would vote in favor of the same.
