Cuban Parliament president Esteban Lazo said that Mexico has historically supported Cuba and he recalled the stay in that country of National Hero Jose Marti, poet Jose Maria Heredia, Julio Antonio Mella, who was killed in Mexico, and Revolution Leader Fidel Castro as well as President Raul Castro.
Speaking at the opening session of the Cuba-Mexico Interparliamentary Forum, underway in the sister Latin American nation, Lazo said that the Mexican Parliament has played an important role in the development of bilateral relations.
The Cuban top parliamentarian also thanked the firm rejection by Mexican legislators of the US blockade of Cuba, their support of the demand for the release and return to Cuba of the antiterrorist fighters held in US prisons and the request for the withdrawal of Cuba from the US black list of states sponsors of terrorism.
Lazo also underscored the significance of the accords reached during the recent summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, held in Havana, on the fight against poverty and the declaration of Latin America as a Zone of Peace.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Anaya and by Humberto Mayas who represented the leader of the Mexican Senate, Raul Cervantes.
Mayans addressed participants to stress bilateral cooperation and the importance of inter-parliamentary forums. He also said that the meeting will contribute to enrich Mexico-Cuba relations.
