Geneva, July 5 (RHC)—Cuba has ratified its support to the Haitian people and its willingness to continue assisting the sister Caribbean nation.

Speaking  in Geneva in the framework of the 38th ordinary session of United Nations Human Rights Council, Cuban diplomat Jairo Rodríguez ratified the island´s commitment towards the Haitian people and reiterated the call made to developed countries and the international community in general to honor their commitments and provide the assistance that Haiti urgently needs.

In his statement, quoted by IciHaiti website, Rodriguez stressed "we will bring our cooperation in the field of education and health and participate in development programs, in collaboration with other nations, fully respecting the sovereignty and self-determination of this sister nation”

The diplomat recalled that the reconstruction and development of Haiti are still a debt to its people who led the first social revolution of the American continent.

"Cuba reiterates that in any discussion of the situation on the Haitian state, it is vitally important to respond to the needs and priorities of its people.”

Rodriguez noted that at present there are 620 Cuban collaborators working in Haiti, among them over 500 related to the health sector. Other areas of cooperation include education, agriculture, fisheries, and technical support for the construction of a dam on the Marion River.
