Havana, December 24 (RHC)-- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez has sent a message via his twitter account to authorities in Indonesia, expressing condolences for the victims of the tsunami that struck coastal areas along western Java and southern Sumatra Islands at 9:27 p.m. local time Saturday.
On behalf of the Cuban government and people, Rodríguez expressed sympathy and solidarity with the families of those killed by the tsunami -- the second deadly tsunami to hit Indonesia this year, after the one that killed more than 2,500 people on the island of Sulawesi on September 28th.
The country's Disaster Management Agency has confirmed that at least 280 people were killed as waves smashed into houses, hotels and other beachside buildings Saturday night along Indonesia’s Sunda Strait. More than 1,000 others were injured in the tragedy and dozens are reported missing.
Experts said the disaster followed an eruption and landslide on Anak Krakatau, one of the world’s most infamous volcanic islands.
