Havana, February 24 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his confidence that the majority of Cubans will ratify the text of the new Constitution in the referendum underway this Sunday.

At 8:15 am, Diaz-Canel, and his wife, Liz Cuesta, waited in line to cast their ballots at a polling station in the Playa Municipality in the Cuban capital.

In remarks to the press after voting, the president recalled that the referendum takes place amidst a moment of imperial threat.

“There is a clear intention of the imposition of a new capitalist restoration platform in Latin America, and Imperialism is resorting to the most hideous and gross practices.  What we witnessed yesterday in the Colombian Venezuelan border is part of that process,” he noted.

He added that this aggression's main targets are the peoples of Latin America, the Bolivarian Revolution, the Sandinista Revolution and the Cuban Revolution and cautioned that what is happening in Venezuela could happen anywhere else.

Diaz Canel described the shameful and undignified attitude by the presidents of Colombia and Chile that converged at the Colombian border with Venezuela to encourage the provocation against Venezuela.

The Cuban leader pointed out that with their participation in today´s referendum, Cubans are not only voting for their constitution, they are doing it as well for Latin America and the Caribbean, and for Venezuela.

“What is at stake in Venezuela is the dignity of the continent,” he stressed

Diaz-Canel said that the Magna Carta being voted today is a result of the debate in which Cubans of all walks of life had the chance to participate, and noted that its text is more robust than the initial draft.

The draft constitution was discussed for three months at neighborhood and workplace assemblies. The discussion led to about 760 modifications to it before parliament gave it a final seal of approval last December

Diaz-Canel expressed confidence in that the majority of Cubans will ratify the text, “because it dignifies and extol the values of the Cuban people, and it leads to the improvement of the Cuban socialist society.”

Preliminary results of the referendum will be announced Monday.
