United Nations, March 28 (RHC) -- Cuba condemned on Thursday before the UN General Assembly the intervention of the United States and NATO in Ukrainian internal affairs, a stand described by Havana as a threat to world peace and security.

Speaking at a General Assembly meeting on the Ukrainian crisis, the permanent representative of the Caribbean nation at the UN, Rodolfo Reyes, criticized the West's promotion of regime change and militarism, with the only purpose of extending NATO's influence to Russian borders.

In this sense he highlighted the latest developments in Ukraine, where last month radical groups supported by the United States and the European Union (EU) led to the overthrow of President elect, Victor Yanukovich, and the creation of a pro-western government.

Reyes also recalled recent statements made by Cuban president Raul Castro and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on the dangers of such interference for world peace.

The plenary session of the 193 UN member nations, analyzed in particular, resolution that condemns the annexation of Crimea by Russia, and declares Crimea’s referendum illegal.

The resolution drafted by Ukraine’s interim government was passed on Thursday with 100 votes in favor and 11 against with 58 abstentions.

Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Russia, Syria, Sudan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe voted against the Project that had the OK of the United States and the immense majority of Europe.

Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and formally became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum on March 16, in which 96.8 percent of the participants voted for rejoining Russia, with a turnout of 83.1 percent.

The move sparked angry reactions from the United States and the European Union, both imposing punitive measures against a number of Russian officials and authorities in Crimea.

Ukrainian lawmakers have announced that they will never recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia, vowing to fight for the liberation of the region as long as it takes.
