Havana, April 19 (RHC)-- Cuba is celebrating the 58th anniversary of the victory at Playa Girón -- also known as the Bay of Pigs -- when the people mobilized in defense of the Revolution and defeated a mercenary brigade at the service of the United States.

That triumph was achieved in less than 72 hours, and was led by the historic leader of the Revolutin, Fidel Castro.   Playa Giron was the first military defeat of U.S. imperialism in Latin America.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, referring to the event, expressed on his Twitter account that the 58th anniversary of the victory of Playa Girón continues to motivate and inspire us, adding that Cuba is fighting another Playa Giron in these days with courage and dignity.

The Cuban president recalled the words of Fidel Castro when he said: "From April 17 when Girón was invaded, our people fought with weapons in hand and with the price of blood, for socialism.'  The current anniversary is taking place in the midst of the escalation of aggression of the current Government of the White House, which seeks to destroy the Cuban Revolution.

On Wednesday, the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, announced the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act.  Meanwhile, the National Security Advisor, John Bolton, in a speech in Florida, announced new measures against Cuba, that intensify the economic blockade imposed on the island almost 60 years ago.
