Washington, April 11 (RHC), -- On Thursday, the US Senate ordered a probe into Zunzuneo, the so-called Cuban Twitter, and asked the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to hand in all information on that subversive program against Cuba.
The Senate Foreign Affairs Committee also asked for information on the messages sent by the government or its contractors to subscribers on the island given the fact that those who were sent those messages in Cuba were never informed about the involvement of the US government in the communications network.
The US Congress is investigating the Zunzuneo case after Associated Press revealed that the program was designed against the Cuban government and involved foreign companies and Banks for its development.
The senate committee discussed the role of USAID in this kind of intelligence operation, which is a traditional job of the CIA and other agencies, and the decision to revise the anti-Cuba program came in after four hearings, one of which was attended by USAID manager, Rajiv Shah, who tried to justify the plan.
Senator Patrick Leahy, who heads the Senate subcommittee for foreign operations, recently said that he was never informed about the anti-Cuba operation, putting into question statements by Shah that the US Congress knew about it.
