March 2020: Driest month in Cuba since 1961

Havana, April 10 (RHC)-- The month of March was the driest month in Cuba since 1961, according to Granma newspaper.

Data from the Climate Center of the Meteorology Institute, states the problem was more serious in the western region of the country, where 5.2 millimeters of rainfall fell. Meanwhile, records in the central and eastern parts reached 9.3 and 9.4 millimeters, respectively.

After the end of the first quarter of 2020, 90 percent of Cuban territory shows deficits in accumulated rainfall, 46 percent of which is considered severe to extreme.

In addition, 23 percent describe the rainfall as moderate and 21 percent as weak.

By province, Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque, Cienfuegos, Camagüey, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo show the greatest damage.

Meanwhile, the average temperature in March was one degree Celsius above normal, and records were set at eight weather stations.
