Havana, April 22 (RHC)-- The General Secretary of the Confederation of Cuban Workers -- Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC) -- Ulises Guilarte, expressed appreciation for the international solidarity of trade union organizations and progressive forces in the struggle against the U.S. blockade.

During the commemorative event for the 150th anniversary of the leader of the world proletariat, Vladimir I. Lenin, at the sculpture complex that bears his name in Havana, the Cuban leader also called for the celebration of May Day.

Referring to the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed on Cuba nearly 60 years ago by successive U.S. administrations, the member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party said that this is the main obstacle to the development of the country.

He stressed that in these circumstances, it also hinders the nation's confrontation with the new coronavirus SAR-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19 virus.

Regarding the celebration of the International Workers' Day on May 1st, Guilarte pointed out that it will be held under very different conditions, although with the same enthusiasm and spirit of victory.

Ulises Guilarte said that Cuban homes will be the fundamental stage for the commemoration, which have become, along with the family, a decisive trench "in the crucial battle" against the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the world.

He underlined that this May 1st will reaffirm the validity of the concept of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, pronounced on May 1st, 20 years ago.
