Havana, May 8 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of Celia Sánchez, a prominent revolutionary and researcher.

On his account on the social network Twitter, the president called her "the woman who put Martí on the highest peak, the heroine of the plains and the mountains, guardian of our memory, protector of the children of our country, faithful assistant of Fidel and lookout for beauty."

In a previous message, the Cuban president pointed out that the Caribbean nation pays homage to her memory. "She accompanies every compatriot who fights against the pandemic, inside and outside Cuba.  She lives in every action of the Revolution of the humble and for the humble," he wrote.

Born on May 9, 1920, in the town of Media Luna, now Granma province, she was a member of the July 26th Movement during Cuba's war of national liberation (1956-1958) and organized the clandestine network of farmers and compesinos in that region.

Her work was vital for the survival of the guerrilla group led by Fidel Castro who landed in the south of Oriente Province on December 2, 1956 and later became the Rebel Army.

After the victory on January 1, 1959, she continued her work in support of all the tasks given to her by the Cuban leader, including the detailed compilation of all the documentation on the revolutionary struggle.

Known in the country as the "Most Native Flower of the Cuban Revolution," she was Secretary of the Council of State, Deputy to the National Assembly (Parliament), member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and of the National Directorate of the Federation of Cuban Women.

Until her death on January 11, 1980, she assumed important responsibilities and was an active participant in the most important moments of the country and in the most significant achievements of the Cuban Revolution.
