Cuba and Jamaica evaluate cooperation possibilities

Kingston, November 19 (RHC)-- Cuba and Jamaica evaluated on Wednesday new possibilities of cooperation between the West Indies School of Medical Sciences at the Mona Campus (UWI) and the homologous institutions of Cuba.

The Cuban Ambassador, Inés Fors, and the Dean of the UWI at the Mona Campus, Tomlin Paul, exchanged through a videoconference about the options of collaboration in the field of Stomatology to improve dental treatment in Jamaica.

Participants noted in the meeting among the opportunities for cooperation the training of Cuban specialists with the School's adjunct faculty and elective rotations of students from Cuba in the clinical location on campus.

The head of the Cuban Health Mission in Jamaica, José Armando Arronte, the counselor of the diplomatic mission, Ricardo Calvo,  the vice dean for international relations of the UWI Faculty, Winston de La Haye, and the director of the Stomatology program, Thaon Jones, also participated in the virtual meeting.

The Mona Campus School of Dentistry was founded in 2010 to educate the future Jamaican dentists to high ethical and professional standards.

The academic program lasts five years and combines small-group teaching using modern information and communication technologies and training with simulation techniques and clinical practice.

In mid-August, Cuba awarded nine scholarships to young Jamaicans to study medicine, nursing, and graduate specialization in higher learning institutions.

The Bilateral Scholarship Program between the two Caribbean countries dates back to the 1970s, and more than 600 Jamaican professionals have been trained at Cuban centers.
