Havana, June 3, (RHC), – Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro expressed his admiration for outstanding volleyball coach Eugenio George, who passed away Saturday.

In a message published on Granma newspaper, Fidel acknowledged the merits of George, who was elected as the best trainer in the women’s category in the 20th century by the International Volleyball Federation.

The Cuban leader recalled that the prestigious and outstanding volleyball expert took the Cuban women’s team to the highest levels in the world.

Several compatriots wondered about the absence of any floral wreath on our name accompanying his coffin. I always admired him so much, but did not learn of his passing till several hours later, said Fidel Castro.

Georges led the Cuban women’s volleyball teams that got gold medals at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, as well as the World Titles in the Soviet Union 1987 and in Brazil in 1994, as well as the Silver medal in Czechoslovakia in 1986, among other prizes.
