Panama, April 28 (RHC)-- The Panamanian government, in coordination with Cuba, extended for two months the stay of 122 specialists from the island for the fight against COVID-19, informed Tuesday an official note from the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

These doctors are part of the 230 internationalists who arrived in Panama last December 24, and the extension responds to requests from "medical directors of several health institutions and in consultation with specialized medical societies of the country, regarding the immediate availability of the national human resource," said the text.

The Minsa statement clarified that this is support with specialist medical personnel and "does not contemplate, nor will it contemplate, nursing personnel, general practitioners or other health personnel, which are not part of the original contingent, nor will additional specialist medical personnel be brought in addition to those already in the country".

Despite the 14 consecutive weeks of a plateau in the number of infections, with a downward trend, the note insists on the responsibility of the Panamanian Government to be prepared for any situation and to have the capacity to respond to a resurgence of the disease.

On April 2, 105 specialists from the Henry Reeve Internationalist Contingent returned to Cuba on a Cubana de Aviación flight after three months in local hospitals.

In the official farewell, before their departure, the Panamanian Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, thanked the Cuban people and government for their gesture of brotherhood and solidarity.
