Addis Ababa, May 6 (RHC)-- The president of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, acknowledged Cuba's contribution to the continent's liberation, the Caribbean nation's Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

According to a press release, the African representative highlighted the altruism of the Caribbean country 'whose sons shed their blood in countries so far away from their geographical area', he said during a meeting with ambassadors of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Faki Mahamat acknowledged the numerous medical brigades in African nations to fight Covid-19 before the Cuban representative to the African Union, Ángel Villa.

For his part, Villa thanked the continental Organization and its member states for their stance at its summits against the U.S. blockade of the island.

Next June 23, Cuba will present its Resolution against the blockade at the United Nations General Assembly. The support of the African countries is expected to be confirmed once again, the diplomat said.

According to the release, CELAC and Africa aspire to strengthen their relations connected with the theme of the year 2021 of the AU, dedicated to art, culture, and heritage.

During the current month, Africa celebrates the 58th anniversary of the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU)  in Addis Ababa on May 25, 1963. The OAU was the predecessor of the current African Union.
