Havana, May 19 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel advocated on Wednesday for a modern, and forward-looking Family Code following the Constitution approved in Cuba in 2019.

During a meeting with the Commission in charge of the draft, the dignitary said, "we are striving for a modern Code, which responds to all constitutional processes, which is an advance in terms of the notion of a family."

"In addition to the drafting, it is necessary to work on the elements of safeguards, as well as on the social media strategy for the debate around the regulation", he added.

For his part, Justice Minister Oscar Silveira specified that the project is supported by science and years of research by universities and national institutions.

He explained that the group formed for its drafting seeks to adapt it to the characteristics of the current society and the families' perspectives.

Silveira assured that the Commission identified 21 fundamental problems for which there are already proposals for solutions. Marriage and de facto unions, filiation issues, parental relations, and institutions of guardianship and protection stood out.

The proposal includes aspects included in the Cuban Magna Carta and other international protocols ratified by the country.

The minister pointed out that the working group constituted on July 16, 2019, worked in a very complex period because of Covid-19.

During the meeting, the President announced that the Commission would regularly convene to evaluate the progress on the draft Family Code.
