Washington, July 8 (RHC)-- The solidarity project Puentes de Amor (Bridges of Love) has already gathered 26,000 signatures to ask the U.S. government to lift the economic blockade against Cuba, activist Carlos Lazo announced Thursday on social media.

The online petition (available at www.puentesdeamor.com) thus surpassed the expected number of 25,000 signatures in rejection of the economic siege against the Caribbean island. It will probably reach 30,000 in the next few days, said the leader of the initiative.

He reiterated that the petition seeks to reactivate the U.S. embassy in Havana, normalize consular services and resume the family reunification program.

Likewise, Bridges of Love requests the restoration of flights from the U.S. to all Cuban provinces, eliminating restrictions that prevent U.S. citizens from visiting the island, and the facilitation of unlimited remittances to the Caribbean nation.

Lazo and other activists continued this Thursday in the state of Georgia a 2,000-kilometer walk that left Miami on June 27, heading to Washington D.C. to deliver to the White House the document that calls for the end of sanctions against the largest of the Antilles.

As part of the trip, on Thursday, they delivered a note to the residence of former U.S. President James Carter in which they expressed their gratitude for his attitude towards Cuba since the former president brought about a certain rapprochement between the two nations after the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.

Under his mandate (1977-1981), the Interests Sections in both countries were opened, and the travel ban on Americans to the Caribbean country was suspended at that time, but currently, a measure of former President Donald Trump denies them that right again.

The Bridges of Love journey will culminate in Washington D.C. on July 25. On that day, people from different states will gather to present to Biden their demands against the blockade, an 'unjust and cruel policy.
