Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez addressed Tuesday UNGA high-level segment on Climate Change.

Havana, October 26 (RHC)--Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez addressed Tuesday the "Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet & Prosperity" - High-level Thematic Debate, hosted by the United Nations General Assembly, in its 76th session.

In his remarks through a video message, Diaz-Canel recalled the words of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, when he warned that if we wished to save humanity from self-destruction, we must better distribute the wealth and technology available on our planet… We must make our human lives more reasonable. Tomorrow it will be too late to do what we should have done a long time ago."

Diaz Canel said that almost 30 years since this premonitory call, and as a result of the irreversible damage caused by humankind on the environment, the human species is at serious risk of disappearing.

The Cuban head of State warned that studies show that the average global temperature has increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius and that it will exceed 2 degrees this century, with catastrophic consequences for life on the planet, of which we hear news every day.

Irrational and increasingly unsustainable production and consumptions patterns of capitalism and the unbridled exploitation of natural resources are dramatically speeding up the danger of extinction of humankind.

"Stopping this is of the greatest urgency, ” he stressed.

Diaz-Canel reiterated Cuba is determined to achieve the goals it has set itself to fully implement the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, and that he hopes that the forthcoming COP26 Summit set for Glasgow, UK, for next week will result in tangible solutions.
