Minister Livan Arronte addresses participants at the beginning of the construction of a solar park in Cienfuegos.

Cienfyegos, December 17 (RHC)-- The Cuban government has included, among the goals for developing the island's energy matrix, the generation of 100% of electricity from national sources, said the Minister of Energy and Mines, Liván Arronte Cruz.

The Minister made this statement in Cienfuegos, where he attended the beginning of the execution of a new photovoltaic generation park.

The park is located in the Municipality of Abreu, where 20 facilities will be built. They will contribute 100 MW to the National Electric Grid, saving 41 thousand tons of diesel, ceasing to emit 140 thousand tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, Arronte said.

The project is funded with capital from the Canadian company Deltro Group.

In addition to the 20 new parks,  the Ministry has identified projects with foreign investment and government credits.

"Some are in the construction stage, others are under negotiation, and some are being implemented, such as this one in Cienfuegos," Arronte  said.

He added that there are solar energy projects with Spain and wind energy projects with India, Russia, Germany, Vietnam, and China.

Regarding the prospects for growth in this field, he said that in the first stage, it would reach 37% of the generation with renewable energy sources, which, together with the dependence on national fuels, would allow advancing towards energy sovereignty.
