Cuba highlighted Thursday at the UN the support provided by the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa) to many developing countries in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

United Nations, February 3 (RHC)-- Cuba highlighted Thursday at the UN the support provided by the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa) to many developing countries in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the segment dedicated to Unfpa, the island's permanent representative to the multilateral organization, Pedro Luis Pedroso, expressed his confidence in the role that this entity will continue to play in favor of development.

In the case of Cuba, he said, we are grateful for the Fund's support for the results achieved in areas under its mandate, such as gender equality, comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health, with emphasis on adolescents and young people.

He also recognized its work in maternal and child health care, prevention of STIs/HIV/AIDS, and the production of information and demographic data, among others.

Pedroso underscored the efforts, dedication and results achieved by Unfpa, despite the impacts of the pandemic.

The Cuban diplomat also explained that the island maintains the population issue as a priority in its National Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030.

In this regard, he ratified the country's commitment to the full implementation of the Cairo Plan of Action, the Montevideo Consensus and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, among other relevant framework documents.
