Havana, May 21 (RHC) --The Meteoro 2022 disaster risk reduction exercise got underway in Cuba. Its purpose is to create all conditions to successfully cope with tropical cyclones and other natural, technological, and sanitary hazards.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz participated in the exercise opening meeting at the headquarters  of the National Civil Defense Staff.

According to specialists from that institution, during the two-day exercise, specialists will assess the forecast of the hurricane season in the Atlantic from June 1 to November 30.

The event will update the disaster risk reduction plans and review the rescue and rescue resources for response and recovery actions, taking into account the existing complex epidemiological situation, despite the control of the Covid-19 pandemic on the island.

The National Civil Defense said that emphasis would be placed on preserving the economy's resources in the face of the effects that may be caused by natural or technological phenomena and the impacts of climate change.

They will also review the measures to face a possible increase in the infestation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito during the rainy season, which began this month, and the insurance against the persistence of drought.

Meteoro is an annual exercise carried out by the Cuban Civil Defense since 1996 to prepare its members and the population in general for different disaster situations.

In addition to the Civil Defense, it involves all state agencies and institutions and the population.
