Queen Elizabeth II

Havana, September 8 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel mourned the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom at the age of 96.

"It is with deep regret that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. On behalf of the Cuban people and government, I express my deepest condolences to His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, the rest of the Royal Family, and the British people and government," the President said on Twitter.

On the occasion of the passing of her Majesty, Diaz-Canel decreed an Official Mourning to be observed Friday, September 9th, from 6 am through 12 midnight.

The statement on National TV said that her Majesty maintained a respectful relationship with Cuba and contributed to expanding the ties between the two countries and peoples.

During the observance of the official mourning, the Cuban national flag will be hoisted at half-mast in public buildings and military facilities.

On Twitter,  Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also sent condolences for the monarch's death.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, the second daughter of King George V, was crowned on June 2, 1953, and retained the longest reign in recent history (about 70 years).

It is regrettable that Cuban government officials felt the need to express condolences about the death of the monarch of a foreign country. It should be remembered that the British monarchy is nothing more than an unelected parasite on British taxpayers. While the poor and homeless in Britain live in misery, this old woman, and her spawn, live their entire lives in the lap of luxury for no reason other than the fact that they were born into a particular family. The concept of monarchy, like capitalism, should be contrary to political systems based upon equality.
