Group 77 plus China
United Nations, January 12 (RHC) Cuba will assume today for the first time the pro tempore presidency of the G77+China to promote the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and foster international solidarity and cooperation in the post-pandemic context.
For the handover ceremony, the Cuban head of state, Miguel Díaz-Canel, is expected to speak in a video message, as well as the Cuban foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez.
In addition, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the 77th session of the General Assembly, Csaba Korösi, and Pakistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, will also take part in the ceremony.
Cuba will succeed the Asian nation at the head of the group in the context of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, as announced in September 2022, in recognition of its defense of the interests of the South.
According to the Cuban foreign minister, during its presidency, the country will promote South-South and triangular cooperation as a more effective instrument, particularly support for the post-pandemic recovery of developing nations.
In addition, it will promote full compliance with the responsibility of industrialized countries in support, through North-South cooperation and will encourage the advancement of common positions among members.
Likewise, it will preserve and consolidate the unity of the group and make its voice heard in the multiple and relevant multilateral processes that will take place in 2023, said Rodriguez during the 46th Ministerial Meeting of the bloc.
The G77+China brings together nations from almost all of Latin America, Africa, and South Asia to promote support in international organizations and the defense of common interests.
It is currently made up of 134 nations, representing two-thirds of UN members and 80% of the world's population, although for historical reasons the name has not changed.
The Presidency of the organization considered the highest political body within the organizational structure rotates on a regional basis (between Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean) and is held for one year. (Source: PL)
