Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez began an official visit to Campeche, Mexico

Mexico City, Feb 11 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez began an official visit to Campeche, Mexico, on Saturday to meet for the fifth time with his host Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

This is the fourth visit that Díaz-Canel has made to this country in the four years of President López Obrador’s administration.

The first visit took place on December 1, 2018, when López Obrador, who is the founder of the MORENA Party, took office after winning the presidential elections of that year with one of the highest votes in the country’s memory, exceeding 30 million votes.

In October 2019, the Cuban president returned to Mexico on an official visit in which both presidents pledged to strengthen the relationship between their countries, which has been happening ever since.

The annual personal meetings were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Díaz-Canel sent contingents of Cuban doctors to support the Mexican Government and people at the worst moment of the disease.

This cooperation continues with the sending of Cuba’s Abdala (CIGB-66) vaccines in these last stages of the SARS-CoV2 scourge. It is the one that is being given to the population as a booster shot.

Once the Covid-19 contagion was under control, the Cuban head of State returned to Mexico City as a special guest of López Obrador during the 2021 national independence celebrations at the capital’s Zócalo square from where he greeted the Mexican people on behalf of the Cuban people.

The fourth meeting between the two presidents occurred in April 2022, this time in Havana, when López Obrador traveled to Cuba on a brief official visit loaded with much symbolism after visiting Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize.

There, the Mexican president firmly condemned the US blockade against Cuba and reaffirmed his defense to the Government headed by Díaz-Canel and those of Nicaragua and Venezuela.

In this fifth meeting in Campeche, Díaz-Canel and López Obrador will discuss Cuba’s medical-health collaboration in the national health programs run by the Mexican Social Security Institute. (Prensa Latina)
