Nursing in Cuba

Havana, May 12 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulated through his Twitter account the nurses of the Caribbean island's health institutions on International Nursing Day, which is commemorated today.

"Heroines and heroes of creative resistance in Cuba are, among many indispensable ones, the nurses of our Health institutions, who jump over the Blockade to save lives. On this International Nurses' Day and every day. Congratulations," wrote the president on the social network.

Nursing professionals make up a strategic sector in Cuba, considered a world medical power for their contributions in various fields of medicine.

Every May 12, International Nursing Day is celebrated in commemoration of the birth of Florence Nightingale, founder of this profession, a woman of health and renovating conceptions, which meant a starting point for the development of health systems in the world.

Also a British writer and statistician, Nightingale is considered a precursor of contemporary professional nursing and creator of the first conceptual model of nursing. She was born in Florence on May 12, 1820 and died in London on August 13, 1910.

The date is a worldwide celebration promoted by the International Council of Nurses since 1965.
