Cuban president exchanges with people affected by heavy rains in Granma

Jiguaní, June 16 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez visited this Friday this town, head of the municipality of the same name, one of the most affected in the province of Granma by floods and heavy rains in recent days in the east of the country.

After walking through several streets of Punta Brava, where he talked with some of its inhabitants, entered houses and greeted all the residents who gathered to receive him, the chief of state headed a meeting to assess the damage caused by the hydrometeorological event and the progress of the recovery strategy of the territory.

In the meeting held in the Benito Granda Parada art gallery, the provincial governor, Yanetsy Terry Gutiérrez, informed that 619 people continue to be sheltered, 45 in state centers and 574 in the homes of family and friends.

So far, she said, 245 families have received assistance with damage to their homes or personal property, and the 105 impacted communities have been visited, in which 57,504 inhabitants live.

The provincial work commissions are paying special attention to the 53 most vulnerable settlements, and there they have been able to exchange with 4,853 residents, whose main concerns are the lack of drinking water, and the loss or deterioration of their material goods, he said.

Terry Gutiérrez also pointed out the need to strengthen the functioning of the community work groups and the hygienic-sanitary measures, in view of a scenario in which the dams accumulate 96 percent of their filling capacity, and continue to discharge Paso Malo, Las Villas, Cilantro, Cautillo, Cauto el Paso, Bueycito, Vicana and the diversion of the same name.

The Cuban President was accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the PCC, other political and governmental leaders of the country, as well as the highest authorities of the province of Granma and the municipality of Jiguaní.
