Havana, September 4 (RHC) -- A worldwide campaign demanding the release of the remaining three members of the Cuban Five, still imprisoned in the United States, gets underway today in 38 nations.
The initiative against terrorism and for the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, and Antonio Guerrero, will run until October 6th.
Kenia Serrano, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, highlighted the contribution from international solidarity groups. She pointed out that as part of the campaign's activities, the Tenth International Colloquium on the Cuban Five will be taking place in Havana on September 11th and 12th, noting that more than 200 delegates from 49 countries have confirmed their attendance so far.
Hernandez, Labañino and Guerrero, along with Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez (internationally known as the Cuban Five), were arrested by U.S. authorities in 1998, for monitoring terrorist groups based in the state of Florida, thus preventing violent actions against Cuba.
Of the five, only Rene and Fernando have returned to Cuba after completing their sentences, while the remaining three remain incarcerated, despite the international campaign calling for their release and safe return to the island.
The coordinator of the International Committee of Solidarity with the Cuban Five, Graciela Ramirez, recalled that the campaign will also include a vigil in front of the White House on September 12th.
The international campaign will be extended further to the virtual world, where activists will campaign on Twitter and other social networks to promote this just cause.
Meetings, marches and rallies will be held throughout Cuba, including a grand cultural gala on September 12th on the steps at the University of Havana.
