Washington, July 17 (RHC)-- Representatives of social movements and organizations in the United States held a peaceful protest in front of the White House on Sunday to demand an end to the illegal and cruel sanctions against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

"We are here to demand our peoples’ sovereignty in Latin America and the Caribbean, Samantha Wherry, a member of the pacifist organization CodePink, said in statements to Prensa Latina.

“We especially demand that the sanctions end, that the blockades on Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela end,” she added.

The young activist commented that the demand also includes that the United States respect the sovereignty of the peoples of Honduras and Colombia, as well as of Peru, in the light of interference in the internal affairs of that country.

We remain very aware of the Cuban people and we send them our solidarity, Wherry emphasized. She recalled that CodePink has a campaign in favor of removing Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, which is made according to the U.S. Government’s criteria.

“Cuba does not sponsor terrorism, these are lies that are invented here in our country, in the White House, in Congress to isolate them and so that we cannot learn from all the social programs of Cubans, which we should take,” she affirmed.  She added that it is time for the United States to have better relations with the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.

In this regard, the speakers stressed that this part of the world is not Washington’s backyard, and denounced the attempts to keep the Monroe Doctrine alive, which has defined the interventionist essence of the US foreign policy for the region since December 1823, nearly two centuries ago.
