UNESCO and Cuba consolidate ties in higher education

Havana, Oct 11 (RHC) The deputy director general of UNESCO for Education, Stefania Giannini, received today in Paris the Cuban Minister of Higher Education, Walter Baluja.

At the meeting, Baluja highlighted the island's commitment to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as well as the promotion of education, a position endorsed by the relevance given by Cuba to the issue in the context of its annual presidency of the Group of 77.

He also invited Giannini to the International Congress of Higher Education University 2024, scheduled for February 5 to 9 at the Havana Convention Palace, an event that will have a forum dedicated to UNESCO and projections in the reference area.

For her part, the deputy director general highlighted the level of cooperation achieved with Cuba. She also noted its leadership in education, demonstrated by being one of the first countries to ratify the World Convention for the Recognition of Qualifications Related to Higher Education and with its participation in the process to materialize it.

Both discussed the importance of collaboration, in particular the UNESCO Campus Africa flagship program, which offers opportunities for South-South and triangular cooperation.

Likewise, they exchanged opinions about the role of universities in the search for sustainable development, a topic in which Baluja shared the experiences of Cuba, accompanied by the ambassador of the Caribbean country to the multilateral organization, Yahima Esquivel.

Another issue discussed by Giannini and the Cuban minister was that of the World Network of Learning Cities, an initiative in which higher education institutions also contribute with the objective of improving individual empowerment and social inclusion, economic development and cultural prosperity.
