Belgium Expresses Solidarity with Cuban Five

Brussels, September 24 (PL-RHC) –- Belgian social and solidarity organizations expressed their willingness to continue fighting for the release of the Cuban men who remain imprisoned in the United States for having fought terrorism. This commitment was made abundantly clear during the visit to the country of Fernando Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five, as they are internationally known, who was attending the Manifiesta festival.

Fernando carried out an intense agenda in the Belgian capital where he met with the members of solidarity groups, legislators, reporters, local authorities and trade union members.

A press release from the Cuban embassy in Brussels highlighted that among Peter Mertens, president of the Belgian Workers Party and U.S. activist Angela Davis were among the leading figures in attendance.

The Hero of the Cuban Republic also met with former director of the Le Monde Diplomatique newspaper, Maurice Lemoine, and Federal deputy, Raoul Hedebouw, Fernando, along with Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and Gerardo Hernández, were arrested more than 16 years ago in the city of Miami, where they had been monitoring mafia groups that were carrying out terrorist actions against Cuba from the United States.

Fernando expressed his happiness at being able to meet people who have supported the cause to free the Cuban Five over these many years.
