Havana, October 16 (RHC) –- As part of measures to fight terrorism in all its forms, the Cuban Customs authorities have begun to set up Radiation Portal Monitors at airports and harbors that receive international cargo and passengers.

For decades, Cuba has been the victim of terrorist acts, so one of the main tasks of the customs authorities here is the detection and neutralization of such crimes, according to an article on Cubadebate website.

Radiation Portal Monitors are considered passive equipment allowing the detection of any nuclear or radioactive material on persons or stored in luggage and cargo.

The new equipment now being installed in Cuba was made in Russia and donated by the International Atomic Energy Agency to Cuban Customs in order to contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of control measures against terrorism.

Terminals 2 and 3 at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, the International Cargo Customs Office and the Container Terminal at the Mariel Harbor will be the first facilities to set up the equipment.
