Havana, January 27 (RHC)-- Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro's message to the University Students Federation gives his support to talks with the United States, in his first comments since both countries agreed last month to restore diplomatic relations, according to an article in this morning's edition of Granma newspaper.

In his message, the Cuban leader said that while he does not trust the policies of the United States, he also doesn’t reject a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Fidel criticized the globalized world, where some people have plenty of resources to squander and others have less than what they need. And he added that chaos rules over the distribution of financial resources and social production in the middle of great threats and dangers of war.

The Cuban leader said it is amazing that the University of Havana was the only university in Cuba only three-quarters of a century ago. Now however, he pointed out, Cuba has more than 50 higher education centers throughout the country.

Fidel highlighted that when he received the invitation to participate in the events for the 70th anniversary of his entry to the University of Havana, he decided to dedicate a few hours to recall those years. “I'm overwhelmed to realize that 70 years have past,” Fidel remarked. And if he had to study again, as some have asked him, he said he would chose a scientific field of study.

“Many friends of Cuba know of the exemplary conduct of our people and I explain to them my essential position in a few words,” Fidel pointed out. “Defending peace is the duty of everyone. Any peaceful or negotiated solution to the problems between the United States and the peoples or any people of Latin America that doesn't imply force or the use of force should be treated in accordance with international norms and principles.”

“We will always defend cooperation and friendship with all the peoples of the world, among them our political adversaries.” Fidel said: “The president of Cuba has taken the appropriate steps in agreement with the prerogatives and powers granted him by the National Assembly and the Communist Party of Cuba.”

He closed his message to the students by saying: “The serious dangers that threaten humanity today should give way to rules that are compatible with human dignity. No country is excluded from such rights. With this spirit, I have fought and will continue fighting until my last breath.”
